Drug Uses
Valtrex drug is mainly prescribed in case of herpes zoster also known as shingles. Valtrex acts by suppressing genital herpes when it is already active and suppress repeated herpes in HIV infected patients. This medicine is also used by treating cold sores – herpes labialis.
How Taken
Start taking Valtrex only if you doctor approves it. It is recommended to start treatment when the first symptoms appear. Valtrex is produced as oral tablets, taken depending on your health condition. If you suffer from genital herpes take the drug 2 times a day for 5 days. For cold sores take it only for a day. In general cases Valtrex is taken 3 times a day (each 8 hours) for one week. Do not stop your treatment earlier than advised, unless your doctor advised you so.
Missed Dose
Try not to miss your daily scheduled doses. If it happens to miss a dose, take it when possible. If the time for the next scheduled dose, take only one dose instead of two, and then go back to your regular schedule. Do not overdose.
Storage
It is recommended to keep Valtrex at a room temperature from 15 to 25°C (59–77°F). Keep away from the reach of children. Store where there is no moisture, heat and direct light.
Overdose
Overdose cases with Valtrex have not been registered. Overdose symptoms are most likely to be seizures, dizziness and drowsiness, hallucination and kidney damage. If you suspect overdose, call your doctor immediately and visit the local poison center.
More Information
In case you are having herpes zoster or cold sores be careful not to infect other people with it. Do not let the infected area to be in contact with other people. It is recommended to wash your hands regularly to avoid disease transmission. Be aware that Valtrex do not protects you from genital herpes and its spreading. Use condoms to protect yourself. Your doctor will advise you other methods of prevention.

Do not take this medicine in case you have shown allergy to acyclovir (Zovirax). You must be supervised during treatment if you have kidney disease or problems with immune system. Your doctor will prescribe you special treatment with Valtrex corresponding to your health condition. Valtrex drug belongs to FDA pregnancy category B and there are no studies if it reacts on unborn baby. For you best safety and your baby’s safety, do not take Valtrex if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant during treatment or you are breast feeder. There is no data if the medicine passes into the breast milk.
Side Effect
Possible Side Effects
You must be aware that side effects during treatment with Valtrex might be expected. You should not take this medicine by kidney problems, but in case you take it, side effects like nervous system problems and kidney failure might be expected. Nervous system problems appear as aggressive behavior, sudden and unsteady movements, hallucinations and disorientation, speech problems, confusion and even coma. If you experience any of the conditions listed above, call immediately your doctor and ask for further assistance. Other, less serious side effects as headache, stomach upset, nausea and dizziness may appear. By patients infected with HIV, extreme tiredness, painful period in women, changes in the blood pressure and blood cell counts, mood changes and depression are also possible.
