Fluoxetine medicine belongs to psychotropic class, comes as tablets, taken only orally. It is mainly recommended when the patient suffers from depression, bulimia nervosa, much kind of disorders including premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Before start taking Fluoxetine talk to your doctor if it is appropriate for your health condition. You may require special dosage adjustment and schedule. The most common case is to take Fluoxetine once or twice a day. It is recommended to take it at the same time, and not to miss a dose. You may need to wait for 4 weeks until you feel relief. The effect of this medicine is up to 9 months after 3 month acceptance. For more serious depressions, you may need longer treatment.

For best result strictly follow your schedule. Fluoxetine should be taken every day regarding your doctor’s prescription. If it happens to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it on the same day. If you notice this on the next day, take only one dose and then turn back to your regular schedule.

Keep Fluoxetine at a controlled room temperature between 20-25 degrees C (68-77 F). Keep away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children.

Do not overdose with Fluoxetine. Overdosing can lead to serious health problems and even death. All medicines which treat depression are dangerous when the dose is increased. Watch out with which other drugs you are mixing Fluoxetine. Possible symptoms of overdose can be excessive heartbeat, sleepiness, seizures and dizziness, vomiting, high temperature, low blood pressure, mania, hallucination and even coma. If you suspect overdose, find medical attention as soon as possible and go to your local poison center.

If you are taking Fluoxetine, you can not take MAO inhibitors. If you have taken MAO inhibitors, wait for at least 2 weeks before starting Fluoxetine. If you have taken Fluoxetine first, wait for 5 weeks before starting MAO Inhibitors. Fluoxetine like all the drugs who deal with depression affect the brain and slow patient’s reactions. Do not mix Fluoxetine with other drugs, unless special prescribed by your doctor. It is not recommended to drink alcohol and take illegal drugs during treatment with Fluoxetine.

Safety Information

You can take Fluoxetine only after your doctor’s permission, in the following cases: recovering from a heart attack, diabetes or any kind of lever disease. Use with cautiousness when you have history of seizures. Fluoxetine causes dizziness, drowsiness and it is possible to interfere on your daily life. Avoid performing hazard activities, operating with heavy machines and other actions requiring full attention. In order to avoid dizziness, do not stand up suddenly. If you feel light-headed very often, contact your doctor. It is possible during treatment with Fluoxetine to notice changes in your appetite, your weight, or your skin reaction (rash or hives). Seek medical attention if this occurs. Do not take Fluoxetine if you are pregnant or a breast-feeder. This medicine passes into breast milk and can be harmful for the baby.

Side Effect

During treatment with Fluoxetine are not expected side effects to occur. By noticing something unusual and bothersome about your health condition, stop taking Fluoxetine and visit your doctor. Your doctor will advise you if it is safe enough to continue treatment. Most possible side effects to occur might be: abnormal vision, anxiety, increases sex drive, abnormal ejaculation, nightmares, insomnia or extreme sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, flushing, gas, weakness, stomach upset, excessive sweating and others. There are more registered side effects when taking Fluoxetine, but the cases are very rare. They can be listed as follows: agitation, non usual taste in the mouth, frequent urination, changes in the mood and behavior, hypersensitivity, hyperactivity, changes in the blood pressure, sleep problems and loss of concentration. In case you experience any of the conditions above, stop taking Fluoxetine and look for medical attention. If the patient is children or teenager, side effect such as excessive menstrual period, hyperactivity, personality changes, constant thirst, nosebleeds and others are possible. Other, not mentioned in the leaflet side effects are likely to appear. Watch yourself closely for abnormal symptoms and report your health provider.
