Prozac drug is an antidepressant which belongs to the group of SSRIs, also knows as Selective Serotonin Reuptake inhibitors. It is given in cases of panic, anxiety, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphonic disorder, obsessive compulsive symptoms and other maniacal conditions.

Prozac is taken only by doctor’s prescription. This medicine is psychotropic and requires medical supervision during treatment. It comes as an extended-release capsule, taken at once by mouth. Regarding your prescription, take Prozac once or twice a day at the same day time. Do not miss your daily scheduled dose. The treatment with Prozac should continue at least 4 weeks in order to experience the full effect of it. For obsessive-compulsive disorder you may need 5 weeks to experience the effect of Prozac. Because of the extended release of the medicine, a 3 month medical treatment may last 9 months. Do not give Prozac to other people, even if they have the same symptoms as yours.

For best results it is recommended not to miss your daily dose. If it happens, take the missed dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, take only one capsule and do not overdose.

Keep Prozac at a controlled room temperature from 20 to 25 C (68-77 F). Keep away from children’s reach. Prozac should be kept in its original packing, away from moisture, heat and direct light.

Do not overdose with this medicine by any chance. Overdosing can be caused not only by exceeding your daily dose, but to mix Prozac with other drugs. Before start taking Prozac, advise your doctor about your medical history and the medicines you are using at the moment. Overdosing include symptoms as nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, sleepiness, drowsiness, mania, unstable blood pressure, excessive sweating, stupor or even coma. In case of overdose with Prozac, look for medical assistance immediately and visit the nearest poison center.

Prozac drug must not be taken with MAO inhibitors. If you are treated with MAO inhibitors wait at least 2 weeks before you start taking Prozac. If you are taking Prozac already, wait for 5 weeks between you stop taking Prozac and start taking MAO inhibitors. Advise your doctor about your full medical history before start the treatment with Prozac.

Safety Information

Before start taking Prozac you have to be advised that it affect the brain and influence on your behavior, judgment and reflexes. Avoid performing any hazard activities such as operating with machines, driving and other activities which require your full attention. Medical supervision is required during treatment, if you have had heart attack, diabetes, and liver or kidney diseases. When taking Prozac you may experience changes in the appetite and weight, dizziness, drowsiness, light headache. Do not stand up at once in order to avoid fainting. Do not take Prozac if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or you are a breast feeder. Prozac is harmful for an unborn baby.

Side Effect

Prozac affects the brain and side effects during treatment are likely to occur. You are most likely to experience insomnia, sleepiness, abnormal dreams, and changes in your sex drive, impotence, abnormal ejaculation, dizziness, drowsiness, flu-like symptoms, dry mouth, nausea, abnormal sweating, tremor, upset stomach and vomiting, changes in your appetite, rash, yawning and other. Other, less frequent side effects might be weight gain or lose weight, bleeding problems, sleeping problems, ringing in the ear, confusion, disorientation, mania, hyperactivity, excessive thirst, chill and personality changes. These side effects are more likely to occur in young people. If you notice something bothersome about your health condition, not listed above, call your doctor immediately and ask him for support.
